Origine des Especes ~ APPROVED BY DARWIN HIMSELF
Book Description
DARWIN s FAVOURED EDITION. Darwin had tentatively given the French rights to Clemence Royer, who was enthusiastic about this work, and her translation appeared in 1862. Whilst he does not appear to have found her French itself greatly at fault, he was dismayed at her additions, which he felt misinterpreted his position, particularly where he had preferred to remain equivocal. He therefore eventually worked with Reinwald to produce this edition, which included his later revisions, and explains in the preface printed in both English and French, that he will not take any royalties from it in order that his motives should not be misinterpreted.
