Book Description

First trade edition of Miguel Covarrubias' stylish and influential third book, in green cloth with red lettering on the front and spine, and Borzoi Books colophon on the back. From the library of the American writer Paul Horgan, with his bookplate. Unpaginated; includes a 6-page preface by Ralph Barton, 7-page introduction by Frank Crowninshield, author's acknowledgements, 4-page List of Drawings, a colour frontispiece and 56 plates, 7 in colour. The book itself has various signs of use and wear, chiefly some minor rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine and the corners, some faint crinkling along the outer external edges of the boards, and some faint sunning where small sections of the jacket were lost. Internally, there's a few small smears in the bottom right hand corner of the pages, and a marginal one on the left. The gutter is exposed at Plate 31. There are four finger-tip sized patches at the bottom edge of four pages of the introduction where the pages have got stuck together in the past and been roughened through separation. The scarce dustjacket has had some repairs on the reverse and is missing sections at the corners, edges and top and bottom of the spine. Various other marks and chafings: see the photos.
Dealer Notes
A vibrant celebration of the Harlem Renaissance, especially its jazz and its dances, seldom seen in the UK. Published when Miguel Covarrubias was just 22, having come to New York from Mexico four years earlier, then rapidly making a big name for himself. Many of the illustrations in this book were first published in Vanity Fair. The preface and introduction by Ralph Barton and Frank Crowninshield have, inevitably, dated in some respects, but what glows through both is a wild enthusiasm for Covarrubias' work: for example, "there is no other word for it - these works bear the stamp of genius". Or, "a rarer quality, which, for want of a better word, we may call 'aliveness,' a feeling of actuality, plus a rhythmic, almost sensuous movement. In many of these portraits a deep sympathy is evident; in some of them a touch of pathos. Note in them, too, how great is his understanding, how accurate his study..." The whole thing calls to mind Larkin's poem For Sidney Bechet: "On me your voice falls as they say love should, / Like an enormous yes".
