Book Description

Original Naval Log for HMS Royal Oak, 1863-1865,compiled by the Captain F.A. Campbell. HMS Royal Oak was a Prince Consort class armoured Frigate built in the 1860's and the lead ship of her class. She had been converted from a wooden ship into an Ironclad and had a displacement of c.4020 tons and with 35 guns of two calibres. Clearly written and with much detail together with hand drawn charts of her voyage in the Mediterranean. A typed list of noteworthy remarks is tipped-in which include deaths and a number of instances of flogging with crew member named and no of lashes. Sadly this was still common practice in the Royal Navy at this time. Heavy black boards with tooled titling. Some rubbing to corners etc, binding firm and contents excellent.
