Book Description

First edition. Duodecimo ( 165mm. ) Pp. xxxii, 480, cxcvii. All edges gilt. Title page with a wood engraved vignette, clean and bright text printed in double columns in Latin and French, head and tail pieces and music. Retaining the integral silk page marker. Almost certainly a contemporary French provincial binding ( Poitiers ? ) of full calf over boards, very lightly rubbed. The covers with an outer double line frame enclosing flower heads connected by oval seeds (?) , the inner corners of the frame with fleurons. The smooth spine with a red title label, and the upper and lower panels with floral decorations. Gilt inner dentelles. Pink endpapers. Light abrasions in the centre of both covers do not detrac greatlyt from this very good plus example of a French provincial binding, which is clearly does not reach the high standards of the Parisien binders. A breviary for the use of the lay folk of Poitiers. Most Breviaries show signs wear and tear the result of continual use, this one, for the use of the lay people of Poitiers has been lightly used.
