Book Description

Leslie has created 22 paintings which illustrate a very personal view of Havana. The text comprises of extracts from Cuba, a short book by Irene A Wright, an American journalist/editor. Published in 1910, her text provides interesting first-hand insights as to the ongoing rich tapestry of daily life; full of curious flavour, detail and manners of the period. Havana is one of the oldest and finest cities in the Americas; fascinating, colourful and vivacious, with crumbling tenements, colonial edifices and faded grandeur - a city with an earthy authenticity, full of contradictions. Here, visitors must expect the unexpected. Graham Greene concluded that Havana was a city where ‘anything was possible’. Awards: Havana, was awarded “Book of the Year 2017” and “Best Art Book” by the British Book Design & Production Awards ceremony in London. The judges comments: “Havana is a stunning large format book, beautifully presented in a cloth covered solander box, with good use of contrasting foil on the cover. The quality of printing on Somerset mould paper is exceptional, and the colourful double page images jump off the page. The book draws the reader in, compelling them to turn every page. Quite simply, Havana is a joy to hold, a delight to look at and a pleasure to handle; making this a truly worthy overall winner.” Where Leslie Gerry Editions can be viewed: British Library (London), Bodleian Library (Oxford), National Australian Library Canberra, Library of Congress Washington, Boston Athenaeum Library, Princeton Library, University of Washington, Yale University, Duke University, Columbia University, Cheltenham Rare Books.
