Act IV of 1726 (also known as the Linen and Hempen Manufactures (Scotland) Act 1726) was designed to prevent frauds and abuses in the linen industry in Scotland. It addressed issues related to the quality of linen yarn and sought to ensure fair practices in its manufacture. It focused specifically on the steeping and watering of flax and hemp. It prohibited the steeping of these materials in boghouses, peat, moss, or turf-pits, and also restricted steeping in standing water for more than one year in the same hole or pit. The act stipulated that if the water source for the steeping pit was a running river or rivulet, it should be frequently supplied with fresh water. Violations of this act could result in the forfeiture of the hemp or lint
