No date, circa 1880, London, Groombridge and Sons, 4to, ppviii + 310, title page in red and black and all text within decorative borders, 36 chromolithographic plates after Joseph Andrews, including frontispiece, numerous wood engravings in text, many full page, contemporary half calf, gilt, over purple cloth boards, spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with gilt title, marbled end papers. The RHS identifies the editor as James Shirley Hibberd (1825-90), prolific gardening writer, who usually published as Shirley Hibberd. Now considered to be one of the founders of the modern consumer interest in amateur gardening, along with William Robinson and Gertrude Jekyll, Hibberd founded Amateur Gardening, still published today, in 1884. These plates and their descriptions might have been initially published in parts, 1879-80.
