Great Granny Webster

Book Description
Great Granny Webster is a macabre and mordantly funny, partly autobiographical novel by Caroline Blackwood that tells the story of an orphaned teenage girl sent to live with her formidable, terrifying Great Granny Webster in her gloomy, rigid house in Brighton after an illness. Through the girl's unsparing eyes, the novel reveals the gothic, chaotic, and dysfunctional nature of the aristocratic family, exploring inherited trauma and madness through vividly eccentric characters and a repressive, chilling atmosphere. Lady Caroline Blackwood was an English writer, socialite, and muse. Her novels have been praised for their wit and intelligence. She was born into an aristocratic British family, the eldest child of the 4th Marquess of Dufferin and Ava and of Maureen Constance Guinness. She married artist Lucian Freud in 1953.
