Book Description

One of 2,000 copies of the first edition, as this work was published simultaneously in two issues, 1,000 issued in boards, and 1,000 in wrappers. Printed price of 1s. net to front flap. T. S. Eliot's "The Rock" is a 1934 pageant-play commissioned to raise money for building new churches in London, depicting working-class men constructing a church while being interrupted by anti-religious forces like fascists and communists. The play contrasts modern materialism and social upheaval with the enduring spiritual need for a church, which serves as a "rock" or stable foundation for society and faith. Episodes of modern construction are interspersed with scenes from Christian history, and the whole work is framed by choruses that comment on the action and the spiritual state of humanity
