Gaudete, inscribed by Hughes

Book Description
London: Faber and Faber, 1977. First edition, first printing. This is a very good copy. In the superb Leonard Baskin dust jacket, which has one closed tear to the inside of the front panel and some light handling marks. Some spots to the head of the spine. It has not been price clipped (£4.50 net). The boards are exceptionally sharp in the publishers black cloth. The text blocks are free from foxing. This copy is inscribed by Ted Hughes on the front fly: 'For David | with thanks | from | Ted | June 1977.' Although the identity of David is not known, it is inscribed in the year of publication and with only the authors first name. Overall, this is a very good copy of an increasingly scarce signed title.
Hughes worked for 10 years on a prose poem, "Gaudete", which he hoped to have made into a film. It tells the story of the vicar of an English village who is carried off by elemental spirits, and replaced in the village by his enantiodromic double, a changeling, fashioned from a log, who nevertheless has the same memories as the original vicar.
