Book Description
London: Jonathan Cape, 1949. First edition, first printing. This is a near fine copy. Rare in this condition. The dust jacket has some very minor handling marks present, as common with these Cape titles. The spine is a trifle sunned, and it is clipped. The boards are immaculate in the publishers red cloth. The gilt titling is pristine. The text blocks are immaculate throughout, and this copy is free from inscriptions. Overall, this is a near fine copy.
The memoir of Maclean's early career. Divided into three parts: his life as a junior diplomat in Moscow and his travels in the Soviet Union, especially the forbidden zones of Central Asia; his exploits in the British Army and SAS in the North Africa theatre of war; and his time with Josip Broz Tito and the Partisans in Yugoslavia.
