Deluxe edition no 44 of 125. 121pp illustrated with line ills. Yap edged paper Book block in good condition. Frontispiece which is a b/w reproduction of and image of the Tree of Jesse, embroidered as part of a cope now held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Decorated paper covered boards, with gilt decorations. Worn on all edges of binding. Internally very good. Scarce to find any copy of this item. May Morris provides an introductory guide to embroidery for beginners. The book contains sections on the history of the craft, stitches and techniques, design and colour. May took over the running of Morris & Co’s Embroidery Department in 1885, The book demonstrates her commitment to and understanding of the art of embroidery. She also designed the cover of this book which is stamped with a floral repeat. This deluxe edition the pattern is in gold in the trade edition it is red on pink cloth.
