This volume represents the first English edition of a work first published in German in 1943. Issued in Berlin to commemorate the seventy-fifth birthday of Arnold Sommerfeld, the original edition had an extraordinary fate: on the very day of publication, before many copies could be distributed, the entire stock and printing plates were destroyed during the bombing of the city. The present edition was subsequently produced for the benefit of American physicists, based on a surviving German copy.
