Book Description

This volume represents the first English edition of a work first published in German in 1943. Issued in Berlin to commemorate the seventy-fifth birthday of Arnold Sommerfeld, the original edition had an extraordinary fate: on the very day of publication, before many copies could be distributed, the entire stock and printing plates were destroyed during the bombing of the city. The present edition was subsequently produced for the benefit of American physicists, based on a surviving German copy. Edited by Werner Heisenberg, Cosmic Radiation; Fifteen Lectures brings together a series of authoritative contributions from leading physicists of the period, addressing the nature, origin and behaviour of cosmic rays. The lectures reflect the state of knowledge in the early 1940s, a formative period in the development of high-energy and nuclear physics, and include both experimental and theoretical perspectives. As such, the work offers a valuable snapshot of contemporary research at a pivotal moment in twentieth-century science, linking the pre-war German scientific tradition with post-war international scholarship. Cosmic Radiation; Fifteen Lectures edited by W. Heisenberg. Translated by T.H. Johnson. Published by Dover Publications, New York, 1946. First edition, thus.
