Book Description

Oblong, 26 x 18.5cm, 18ff, 6 colour & 12 b/w lithographic illustrations, decorative initial letters. Original olive cloth, bevelled cover edges, upper cover titling in gilt with floral spray beneath; decorative spine border of flowers & gilt rules, all edges gilt. A very pretty Victorian colour illustrated printing of Longfellow’s popular poem The Day Is Done. In the charming sentimental style, we inhabit a world of ploughmen drenched in golden sunshine, twilight over rural cottages and tired labourers trudging home to be greeted by children in flower filled gardens, in this poem that speaks of the power of literature to take us away from the cares of the day. A very good copy (scattered light spotting; upper internal hinge cracking).
Author Longfellow, Henry Wadworth. The Day is Done.
