Billingsgate Market Scenes
Book Description
LEECH, John. Two pen and watercolour wash sketches featuring scenes at Billingsgate Market, London’s famous fish market. The first, clearly signed by Leech shows a Porter carrying fish in a basket on his head whilst a gentleman nearby pulls a face and flaps his hand to waft away the apparently offensive smell. Size of the image approx 16 cm x 11 cm. The second unsigned sketch which looks as if it was drawn quickly on the spot, shows Billingsgate fish-jobbers in their aprons and top hats. The size of the image approx 19cm x 11 cm. John Leech: Born 29 August 1817 London, England, Died 29 October 1864 (aged 47).
Caricaturist and illustrator best known for his work for Punch magazine, and for his illustration of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Both watercolour sketches loosely mounted on to album leaves.
