FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. 8vo, pp. xvi, 400 + b/w plates. Blue-grey boards, spine lettered in gilt. Heavy bump to head of spine, bruising to heel. Edges toned, nick to fore-edge of pp. 371-2. Flat-signed in blue pen by Morpurgo to ffep. Short closed tear to bottom edge of one plate (bwn pp. 144 & 145). Else, clean and tidy. A very good copy, unusual with the author’s signature.

Professor Jack E. Morpurgo (1918-2000) was Director-General of the National Book League and Professor of American Literature at the University of Leeds. A significant portion of his career was spent under the tutelage of the founder of Penguin Books, Allen Lane, whose biography he also wrote.
