ALS to Mr. Moore, 1946

Book Description
174x132mm. Single sheet, double sided. Headed at Gorringes, Downe, Kent and dated 9. 2. 46. Written in dark blue ink. It reads: ‘Dear Mr. Moore, | Very many thanks for your | letter & for the kind invitation | of the Successen [?] Golfing Society to | become its President. I cannot | help feeling that you refer to me | as a [?] & that I am altogether | an inappropriatee & unworthy person, | but I much appreciate the honour | & the [?] of the invitation | and I do gratefully, if diffidently, | accept. I imagine that the duties | of the office will be honourable | rather than onerous! | Again many thanks. | Yours very truly | Bernard Darwin’.
Following Darwin’s note, one fold contains what appears to be the recipient’s pencil manuscript, noting a small-scale golf tournament score. It could also be recording handicaps (I am not a golfer).
A wonderful letter from Darwin, in which he accepts presidency of the Sussex Golfing Society.
