A NATURAL HISTORY OF REPTILES, SERPENTS, AND INSECTS.
Book Description
12mo. (13.8 x 8.8cm). Publisher’s original illustrated paper wrappers with wood-engraved vignette of a butterfly to the upper cover and a large wood-engraving of a girl selling flowers to the lower. Illustrated with 35 wood-engravings by Thomas Bewick. 36pp. Loosely contained within a contemporary full black calf folder, the booklet held in place with a black ribbon. The folder with the boards ruled in gilt, four raised bands to the spine, gilt ruling to compartments, and gilt morocco title label. A very good copy; the covers with a little toning; the contents with pp.17-20 loose but held securely in place by the black ribbon, an old clipping from a bookseller’s catalogue pasted to the verso of the upper cover, and some old pencil notes to the front free endpaper verso, are otherwise in very good order. The calf folder with some damp-marking to the upper board and a little rubbing to the extremities is otherwise good.
Dealer Notes
An appealing little chapbook-style booklet illustrated with 35 wood-engravings of reptiles, serpents, and insects by Thomas Bewick, within the original attractive illustrated wrappers. Davison issued seven of these titles separately, which together formed a ‘natural history’, offering a more affordable, accessible version of Bewick’s celebrated work.
