A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Book Description
Published in 1888, this is a rare and lavishly produced Ernest Nister production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, beautifully illustrated with six stunning chromolithographic plates and twenty-seven sepia drawings within the text by the artist Julius Hoppner who was well known for his fairy and fantasy illustrations. Bound in bevelled edged cream cloth boards and highly decorated in gilt with an inset illustration to upper cover, page edges gilded all-round, a large folio format measuring 15 inches by 12 inches approx., with silk endpapers, text printed on thick card paper, the colour illustrations protected with tissue guards. The superior production of the chromolithographic illustrations must be among the best produced of the period.
Dealer Notes
The covers have some mild marking and minor bubbling to cloth on rear cover, internally there is noticeable heavy foxing to the opening and closing pages including the endpapers, some straining of one gathering else in good general condition.
