This is a collection of two very rare original hand drawn manuscript plans and a manuscript document for the Churnet Valley Railway branch line to Stoke On Trent dated 1844, the line was opened in June 1849, the lot consists of a large plan measuring 39 inches by 29 inches approx. drawn on Whatman paper which is watermarked with the date 1834 which shows the line where it runs through the parishes of Cheddleton and Leek running by the River Churnet and Caldon Canal, this plan has some creasing and wrinkling to the paper and is noticeably browned along left hand plain edge. The second smaller hand drawn plan measures 19 inches by 10 inches and shows the inclination of the proposed Churnet Valley railway line, this plan is on Afonwen Mill watermarked paper dated 1834, the plan has a tear on the right hand edge with no loss with some edge wear. The third item is a handwritten document titled “Churnet Valley Railway Branch to Stoke Reference” on Afonwen watermarked paper dated 1837, and contains a list of properties and lands along the proposed route of the line with the names of the owners, all of which seemed to be owned by the Duke of Sutherland.
