Trilby. Limited Edition 93/250.
Book Description
An interesting copy of the 1895 Limited Edition 93/250.
Vellum boards with faded gilt titles to the spine. The corners of the boards are bumped and the spine whilst firm is beginning to show signs of cracking ; the pages of the text block are untrimmed.
There is a note to the front Endpaper to the effect that the book was given to a previous owner (a Mr Drake ) by Lord Abergavenny and that it was from the Library of Lord William Nevill of 11 Brechin Place South Kensington.
Other than the book itself, the main interest is that there are various insertions in connection with the first British performance of the Stage version of 'Trilby' which opened on 30th October 1895 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. The Programme itself is attached inside the front cover and there are signatures of George du Maurier, Gerald du Maurier, Dorothea Baird, C M Hallard, and Gayer Mackay.
Furthermore, full page portraits , tissue protected and in character, of the following cast members have been tipped in front and back of the text block ;-
Dorothea Baird (Trilby)
Mr (Herbert Beerbohm ) Tree (Svengali )
Mr Herbert Ross
Gerald du Maurier
Lionel Brough
Edmund Maurice
Miss Rosina Filippi.
The Play apparently ran for 6 Months in the West End before touring the Provinces.
