First edition, 4to (270 x 220 mm), [4], xxiii, [3], 668pp., with half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, 6 engraved maps (2 large folding linen-backed), maps offset onto facing page, slight foxing to title, blank outer lower corner of final two leaves cutaway, preceding two leaves with minor insect damage to blank margin, new endpapers, cont. calf, neatly rebacked, spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt, remnant orig. red morocco spine label laid-down, corners rubbed.
