Book Description

FIRST GRANT ILLUSTRATED EDITION. 4to. (11 x 8.7 inches). Beautifully illustrated throughout with 8 full page colour plates and each text page with tan ink printed line illustrations around the type. A fine, bright copy finely bound, for Asprey, in half black morocco. Spine with two raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. navy blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The binding is signed by Aspreys in gilt letters to the bottom of the inside front board. There is no binders signature but this is certainly the work of a master bookbinder, very likely Sangorski and Sutcliffe, who did a lot of work for the firm. A truly handsome copy of this classic work. There was no UK edition published. Volume designed by Carl Purington Rollins. The text is set in Bell type and printed on a rag paper made by The Worthy Paper Company. Gordon Grant (1875–1962) was a noted American illustrator, best know for his maritime paintings.
