THIRD EDITION, but the first in this quarto format, preceded by two English editions, each three volumes, octavo, the plates multifolded. This was Niewentyt's most significant contribution to the study of the natural sciences, viewed from a theological perspective in a series of 'Contemplations' part scientific, part religious, and illustrated with a quite remarkable series of scientific illustrations. The work first appeared in Dutch in 1715, arguing for the existence of God in opposition to Spinoza. It would subsequently become a highly influential text throughout the 18th Century. A very good sound copy with early ownership of Henry ?Forcelaine to the title, also 'G G' cost me....1780 Mar 3rd G B cost me 4:4.'
