This book (first published in 1757 and running to three editions in its first three years) is dedicated to “Cabinet-Makers, Brokers, and Appraisers and also to other dealers in Plate-Glass”. It tells us almost everything we could possibly want to know about the making, grinding, polishing, repairing of glass and mirrors with detailed tables for the pricing of this work depending on the size of the glass. The Compleat Appraiser, which forms the second part of this book, sets out tables for the valuing and measuring of iron, pewter, lead, damask, furniture and liquors (etc) for use in the kitchen. A fascinating insight into various 18th century domestic trades and their economics.
