Book Description

Edition de Luxe in a limited edition of 500, this one numbered 116, signed by Peary and Robert Bartlett (Captain of the SS Roosevelt), 326pp, teg, remainder uncut, frontispiece (of Peary) and 3 other full page photogravure plates, 112 tipped in plates, fold out map, vellum gilt boards. The contents are in reasonably good order with spotting, marks and foxing throughout. All the plates are as called for, the map is loosely inserted and is a replacement from the smaller cloth bound edition. The frontispiece tissue guard is missing. The boards are distressed – the upper board is spotted, worn and very loose, the spine is missing (although the spine covering is partially present, albeit in poor condition) and the back board is detached and lacking its vellum. The ties are missing. A restoration project! Peary and his 5 man team claimed to have reached the North Pole on 6 April 1909, although whether he actually reached the North Pole has been disputed.
