Book Description
A very smart set indeed of this limited edition version of Don Quixote.
The History of The Valorous and Witty Knight-Errant Don Quixote of The Mancha, by Cervantes, 1895. Translated by Thomas Shelton 1612-1620. The Introduction by Justin Huntly McCarthy. The Illustrations by Frank Brangwyn. In 4 Volumes, complete.
Published by Gibbings and Co. Ld., London, and J.B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia, 1895. First edition thus - an uncommon edition - limited to 1500 copies printed by Morrison and Gibb, Edinburgh, 1895.
A near fine set of hardbacks bound with tan leather spines and corners with marbled paper over boards, veined with gilt ink. Matching marbled endpapers. Spines with gilt tooled decoration and titles, with 5 raised bands. Minor wear and bumping. All soundly bound.
Text is clean and bright throughout with the plates well presented. Both half title and full title page printed in dark brown and red ink. Gilt top edge with rough cut vertical edge. The set is likely to be unread as some text pages still uncut. Frontispieces with tissue guards.
A handsome set.
