Book Description

One of the most influential editions of any book of all time: the first Bible with numbered verses, the version used by Shakespeare, and by the Founding Fathers. However, an example for reference or restoration perhaps. In more detail, first edition. 4to. Lacks OT title page and all before b2 (Genesis Chapter XIII), lacks all after Hhhh4; dii and Tttiv seemingly not used in collation; additionally lacks eii-iii, and HHhii-iii, very worn and corners eroded at outset, slight wear throughout, light water staining and browning throughout. Contemporary stamped calf, very worn, hinges crudely repaired to the outside, recent crude paper endpapers added, original front flyleaf bound before e4, ten illustrations to text in Exodus, one in Numbers, eight in I Kings, four in Ezekiel, double page maps to vi, Ciii, Tttiii, AAii, and SSii. Maps often with doodles or writing or otherwise worn but complete. Lacks therefore in total some 23 leaves, mostly to the front and rear. However, all five of the called-for double page maps are present, as is the NT title page. Occasional early names or doodles; William Steuart to flyleaf (repeated); John Gow James to folio 153; George Thorburn to third map; Elizabeth Ferg [?] to first map. From the names, it would appear that the Bible has spent some time in Scotland, or at least in Scottish hands.
Dealer Notes
One of the most difficult Bibles to find in good condition or indeed to find at all. Indeed, we know of none complete either available for sale or that have appeared in the rooms in recent years. It could be kept as is, of course. Alternatively, we have been quoted a price of £5000 plus VAT from a skilled binder to restore it entirely: that is; to wash lightly, repair the pages as much as possible, resize, replace the missing pages in good quality facsimile, rebind, and reback with the remains of the original spine. If this is desired, no doubt it would look very nice indeed. Please arrange to inspect if possible before purchase so as to be clear as to present condition, and the challenges that it presents. Obviously a distressed, but still valuable item historically, bibliographically and from a collector's point of view. Herbert 107; ESTC S101758.
