Book Description

5 hand-coloured plates, engr. vignette on title,
Dealer Notes
Collations vary, we have seen a listing with 6 plates, but the Osborne Collection copy has 5, like ours, and, of the only two copies we found in auction, both part of job lots, one records a frontispiece only (Forum, 2021), and the other, 5 plates like ours (Lot 152, Sotheby’s, 25th Feb. 1976).
The work and its illustrations conform to the ‘papillonade’ genre associated with William Roscoe, and as well as featuring anthropomorphism, it references the Atlantic slave trade.
