Book Description

[Second edition], edited and annotated by the novelist Charles Gibbon. It contains over 1000 entries from 500 authors, and is illustrated with 54 full page plates, including an engraved title and frontispiece bearing the likenesses of some of the authors, in each volume. A near fine set, bright and sharp, with all edges gilt; minor wear to a few corners; a couple of hinges tender; a few leaves/plates with old bookmark stains.
Dealer Notes
The collections range widely across the English language, and include many American writers like Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Louisa May Alcott, as well as British stalwarts like Coleridge, Kingsley, Shakespeare and Mrs. Hemans. Most entries are in the one to five page range, making them perfect for short readings in the evening with the family in front of the fire — the Victorian equivalent of radio or television. We have included one image from v.4’s Table of Contents for your perusal.
