Fay Weldon was commissioned by Italian jewelers Bulgari to write a novel mentioning their product at least a dozen times; they planned to issue a limited edition of 750 copies, in clamshell case, to give away to guests at a corporate party. The result raised eyebrows, and hackles, across the literary world. Most reviewers had to admit that, though the 30+ mentions of the sponsor weighed it down, the story was fun to read.
