Inscribed on fly leaf: To Lady Mary Cecil, Wishing her every happiness, April 21st 1917. Lady Mary Alice Gascoyne-Cecil (1895 – 1988) was the daughter of James Gascoyne-Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury. She married Edward Cavendish, Lord Hartington on 21 April 1917. In 1938 Lord Hartington succeeded his father as 10th Duke of Devonshire and Mary became Duchess of Devonshire. She was Mistress of the Robes to Queen Elizabeth II from 1953 to 1967.
