Book Description

Quarto. xii, lxxiv, 236. 50 full-page plates illustrating Roman antiquities and painting. List of subscribers present (amongst which is David Garrick). Original full diced calf, marbled endpapers, delicately gilt spine, raised bands, and contrasting label, top edge gilt. Front hinge cracked. A very beautiful production, one aimed at introducing to a British audience the spectacular finds from Herculaneum, and the wonders of classical Roman art. No more was published. Please note: this example lacks the map frontispiece, seemingly never bound in. Nevertheless, a very attractive scholarly item with magnificent plates. Priced accordingly.
