Dealer Notes
In 1920, the British launched their fifth military expedition against Mohammed Hassan, the Somali religious leader known as the ‘Mad Mullah’. Hassan established a Dervish state in Somalia, and his forces attacked British and other colonial posts during 20 years of conflict. The images in this present album were taken by members of the ‘Z’ Unit Royal Air Force in Somaliland operations 1919-1920. The expedition employed planes for the first time in the region, and the first three images show aerial views of the Eil Dur Elan camp and hospital. There follow ground-based photographs of the camp itself, and of the hospital plane that ferried casualties to the camp for surgery - two of the images show the first cot case arriving at the camp from El Afweina. Some of the photographs can be found in an album held by the National Archives in the United Kingdom, and to judge from the emphasis in the present album on the hospital at Eil Dur Elan it seems likely that the album was compiled from official photographs for a member of the medical staff.
