Bound in original full tree calf, professionally rebacked with original spine and gilt lettered leather title label laid on. Binding solid. Marbled endpapers. 4to, 29 x 24cm. Text and plates in very good clean condition. Period signature top of title, Portrait frontispiece of Evelyn by Bartolozzi. Superbly illustrated with 40 engraved plates (1 folding) and a folding table. Mostly by John Miller. This is the First Hunter Edition, with the scarce printed subscription receipt, SIGNED BY HUNTER, tipped in. Some interesting names on the subscribers list, including Joseph Banks.

Original published in 1664, this was the first important book to be published in Britain on forest trees.
This impressive reissue by Alexander Hunter in 1776, with additional plates, gave the publication a renewed popularity.
