When John Piper was Editor of the Shell Guide series he invited Peter Burton, one of the distinguished photographers for the series, to write the book on the North Riding of Yorkshire, where he had lived all his life. Unfortunately the series came to an end in 1983 before the book was finished. The Ridings were subsequently 'abolished' by the Government but Peter Burton doggedly pursued his project and this book was finally published in 2006. It is dedicated to the memory of 'the peerless' Henry Thorold who , of course wrote 5 superb Shell Guides, largely illustrated with photographs by Peter Burton !
