Book Description

No. 56 of 85 copies, signed by the artist and John Mason, small folio (335x260x20mm), full blue morocco leather, gold tooled on upper cover, bevelled boards, lettered in gold on spine, t.e.g. + deckle edges, housed in a leather edged, marbled paper boards slipcase, fine, 6 double page and 5 single page illustrations hand printed by the artist from copper plates incorporating the techniques of engraving, etching, aquatint, soft ground etching, drilling and grinding. The colours are printed in both intaglio and relief and some additional colour is applied to some pages by hand, the typography and printing of the text is by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press and the paper is hand-made at the Richard de Bas mill, the binding is by George Percival, there is a note by John Mason tipped into the front paste down describing the endpapers hand-made at a Dutch mill.

In 1967 J.G.Lubbock retired to work on his wonderful books of engravings inspired by the spiritual nature of the landscape and the sea. They are full of atmosphere and depth of feeling and deserve their place in the history of contemporary livres d'artistes.
