Hardback. Beautiful book mainly focused on the University, with chapters on Oxford before the university, medieval student life and Jacobean periods as well as the nineteenth century, High Church Oxford, etc and finishing with a chapter on undergraduate life. With illustrations in colour by George F. Carline. Each illustration is tipped onto thick dark paper which sets off the colours of the paintings and each has a guard printed with the description. Illustrations include Great Tom, Merton College, Merton Library, Holywell Street, Broad Street, The High, Christ Church, St John’s College, Magdalen College,New College Cloisters, etc. There is a frontis and 15 further plates. Bound in grey cloth Illustrated in red, black green and gilt to front and spine. Andrew Lang, best known for his Blue Fairy Book, Red Fairy Book, etc was a fellow of Merton College, Oxford and had been an undergraduate at Balliol College. 223pp. Larger format (quarto): 255 by 195mm (10 by 7¾ inches). Some editions have fewer plates and earlier editions have none. Rubbed to edges and with a fairly deep scratch to the front. Softened to spine ends. spine is darkened except for the tail area which has whitened. Prelims and final few pages are fairly heavily foxed. Beautiful plates are all present and in fine condition. Front internal joint has had a neat repair with professional book repair tape (which does not yellow) and is hardly visible. Bumped to one corner of the lower board. Text is clean. Binding is sound.
