A little faded, spines a little creased from the reback, sunned to the front board of volume 3, but a nice tidy set overall. Dealer Notes
This, the three-volume edition preceded the completion of the part issue in Bentleys Miscellany, which continued until 1840. Shortly after the earliest copies left the press, Dickens asked for a number of changes: he requested that his name be placed on the title page instead of Boz (though Boz remains on the spine). He also upon seeing for the first time the final plate in Volume 3 decided that it did not please him, and had it substituted for another, replacing the so-called Fireside Plate with the Church Plate, as here. The publishers ad to the front of volume 3 was replaced with a half title, meaning that unusually we have here a half-title to each volume, and Pilaster is corrected to Pier Vol 3 page 164. Further, most of the small typographical errors additionally noted by Smith have been corrected (though the quotation marks are still missing before She Vol 1 page 207, line 11; Vol 2 Chapter XXVII is still misnumbered XXVI). Unlike the earliest issue, the printers here are Vol 1 Samuel Bentley, Vol 2 T. C. Savill, and Vol 3 Samuel Bentley (ie. Bentley appears to have moved away from Whiting as the joint printer for whatever reason earlier than Smith thought, implying that the first edition was variously printed by three printers rather than two). Bibliographically speaking, a most interesting set, showing Dicken's immediate and continuing engagement with the production of his work even so early in his career. Smith 30-37; Eckel 51-54; Podeschi 29.
