Dealer Notes
AB 11391. In 1910 an expedition sponsored by Norddeutsche Lloyd and others sailed to Spitsbergen to investigate the possibility of using Graf von Zeppelin's rigid airship for polar exploration and research. Although the airship itself was not used, a balloon with gondola made some experimental ascents. Much work was done on assessing the feasibility of a Zeppelin expedition - meteorological readings were taken and the possibilities for landing the airship on ice examined - yet in spite of Zeppelin himself concluding in favour, no such expedition ever took place. This stunning record of the expedition includes contributions by, among others, Zeppelin himself and Erich von Drygalski, leader of the German Antarctic Expedition.
