Book Description

‘Mesiths: Or The One and Only MEDIATOUR Betwixt God and Man, The Man Christ Jesus’ (Wing B4718) ~ by John Brinsley (1600-1685) the younger; printed by Tho. Maxey for Ralph Smith, at the sign of the Bible in Cornhill, neer the Royal Exchange, London 1651. (John Brinsley was born in Ashby-de-la Zouch, Leicestershire in 1600 and died in 1685 and is buried at great Yarmouth. Leather with 3 faux bands on spine. The leather cover is wrapped over the front & back boards of the book and stuck on the inside boards.. There are many notes in ink and dates on the inside back cover from several centuries ago. Book is small 8vo - 4 1/42 x 6 ½”; the book is split into 2 parts with part 1 starting at title page which is quite stained & worn; (there are no front end papers), then 8pps including ’A Table of the chief Points’; the first section finishes at p272. and the 2nd part starts at The Epistle (page A1 is missing & p A2 has a section torn out with the bottom right corner c2” x 4”); then 6pps of ‘A Table of the chief Points’ then followed by Mythical Implantation on p1 and finishes on p255 which is the last page of the book. Covers are worn and corners are bumped, also there is a c2” split on the top front cover/spine and a c3/4” split in the centre bottom of the spine - but all sections are fully intact; which is quite miraculous considering it’s age. Book is well used and worn with age. There are numerous notes in pencil & ink made throughout the book, also many pps are slightly damaged with page corners having worn off or being turned over; in the 1st part pps 126-130 have some light blue staining on pages & pps 253 & 255 have a small section torn out on top of page - the actual text is not affected, only the notes on the side of the text; in the 2nd part pps 15/16 & 165/166 have some damage; many pps in the book are very delicate and could easily be damaged with careless handling. There are some slight damps stains on various pps and of course light foxing/browning is on many/most pps The vendor has checked each page individually. The text is easily readable throughout the book. See following reference on the author: https://www.apuritansmind.com/puritan-favorites/john-brinsley-1600-1665/ Book is 355 years old. Very Rare - no other copy seems to be available for sale from my checking at time of writing this description.
