A portrait of a leading geologist whose work on the understanding of strata was an important contribution to the field.
In 1831, the new generation of Fellows of the Geological Society, long aware of the treatment meted out to Smith, awarded him their first Wollaston medal in “recognition of his being a great and original discoverer in English Geology” (Proceedings of the Geological Society, 1, 1831, 271). In 1832 he received a government pension of £100 a year.
