Dealer Notes
= Fine, complete set. Marriage A-la-Mode is a six-part satirical series by William Hogarth that follows the downfall of an arranged marriage between the son of a bankrupt aristocrat and the daughter of a wealthy merchant. The plates depict: 1. The Marriage Contract – A loveless arranged marriage is negotiated between two corrupt families; 2. The Tête-à-Tête – The newlyweds already drift apart amid signs of infidelity and excess; 3. The Inspection – The husband visits a quack doctor after contracting a venereal disease; 4. The Toilette – The wife entertains admirers while hosting a fashionable, decadent gathering; 5. The Bagnio – The husband finds his wife with her lover and is fatally wounded in the confrontation; 6. The Death of the Countess – The lover is executed, and the wife dies by poison, completing the tragic collapse.
The series satirizes aristocratic corruption, moral decay, and the consequences of marriages made for status rather than love. Taken from: The Genuine Graphic Works of William Hogarth : Consisting of One Hundred and Sixty Engravings, Faithfully Copied from the Originals. By Thomas Cook (London, 1808-1810).
