PERCY, Charlotte. Duchess of Northumberland, [1787-1866] The Toilette Table, manuscript title, 17 illustrations in pen, ink and watercolour, some heightened with gold. Bound in the original contemporary red velvet with applied gilt paper border. All edges gilt. Very Good condition externally. There are small stains to head of upper cover, a small chip to head of spine, some wear to joints, internally Near Fine. Approx 106mm x 90mm. Provenance is given by a manuscript note loosely inserted; "Painted by Charlotte Duchess of Northumberland...NB. one or two of the 'objets d'art' finished by Miss Mary MacGregor 1850". The illustrations are of objects that might figure on a dressing table, each object of the toilette accompanied by a handwritten virtue. The title “Fine Lip salve” a chinese ointment jar, bears the word “Truth”. Another jar, under the title “An universal beautifier” has the legend “Good Temper” and a fine urn under the title “To soften the voice” has the caption “kindness” [ etc].
Lady Charlotte Florentia Clive, second daughter of Edward, 1st Earl of Powis, married Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland in 1817. She was appointed State Governess to Princess Victoria in 1831 to accompany her on public occasions.
