SCHIFFNER, Emily. An early 19th century landscape format sketch book inscribed “Emily Shiffner 1828” on the front pastedown. Bound in the original half morocco with marbled paper covered boards, approx 17 cm x 24.5 cm. Light cosmetic restoration to leather only. Pp 41 used rectos only, for 'Grand Tour' pencil, ink and wash sketches, with occasional watercolour enhancement. Emily was a very competent artist, recording scenery and people in street scenes, as well as costume in the various locations of her Grand Tour. Most of the places that she visited are noted in pencil on the verso leaves opposite the pictures. These include : “ Places d’armes Ghent”; “Market Antwerp” with notes about costume; “ From the Hotel d’Angleterre Antwerp” a lovely street scene; “ Spa 1828 from our lodging”; a page in watercolour of comparative headgear from Cologne, Bonn, Frankfort, Augsberg; “ Frankfort Fair”; the harbour in Genoa; Spezzia with notes on hairstyles; street scenes in Nice, and another scene of washerwomen; “ Berne opp. Hotel”; a sepia watercolour of Berne “ from the heights of Altenberg”; alpine chalets at Unterseen, and another chalet scene dated 1829; “ Costumes on Grindelwald”; Lake Lucerne; “ Tarantella Ischia”- a scene of dancers and musicians; [ etc.] A pleasing album.
