Iphigenie auf Tauris
Book Description
This play is by Goethe, one of the greats of 18th-century esoteric thought. It is a re-working of Euripides' ancient Greek tragedy Ἰφιγένεια ἐν Ταύροις. Goethe's title means 'Iphigenia in Taurica'; he wrote the first version of his play in six weeks, and it was first performed in 1779, in prose form. Goethe rewrote it in 1781, again in prose, and finally in 1786 in verse form. This rare limited edition was produced in Weimar, Germany. Thiersch became a notable bookbinder and designed and executed many of the Bremer Press bindings. Thiersch would go on to bind some of the most important documents and books for Hitler and the Third Reich.

Eleventh printing of this edition (the print runs apparently being quite small). 26 x 17.5 cms, 79 pp. Bound in full contemporary vellum (other Drugulin printings of this work seem to have oscillated between half vellum, cloth etc.), titled in gilt to spine and front board. Boards slightly bowed, as is common with rigid vellum bindings. Elaborately marbled endpapers. Inscription to flyleaf. Internally clean, the text being printed throughout in red and black. A lovely copy of a scarce small press edition of Goethe.
