Dealer Notes
William James Manders (1821-1871) managed one of the most successful menageries in the 1850s and 1860s. An employee with Hylton’s Menagerie, Manders purchased it and renamed it Manders’ Grand National Star Menagerie around 1852, establishing himself as a rival to Wombwell’s menagerie. Among the attractions was the famous lion tamer, Martini Maccomo. When Manders died in 1871 his menagerie was auctioned off at the Agricultural Hall. The present elaborately produced memorial card incorporates a portrait of Manders within an embossed gilt monumental figure.
