Book Description

The Golden Gate Suite which comprises 3 hand finished screen prints incorporating foil. The titles are; 'The Kiss', 'Singing Hands' and 'Flying Flower Person'. They are in their original illustrated presentation envelope which also has a screen print on the front cover. All are signed in pencil and dated '75 in the bottom right hand corner. All are numbered 1/60 next to a small embossed 'ep' mark in the bottom left hand corner. These prints are very scarce and the print run unusually small for Appel's prints. The original plate was destroyed after the print run was complete. Each print is 102 x 75.5 cm approx The combination of bold screen print with collaged foil creates a more dramatic effect, typical of Appel's bold and bright expressionist approach. The prints are in very good and bright condition. As is usual with this screen print collage process, the foil areas have some occasional thin creases, formed during the print making process.
Dealer Notes
Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet. He painted bright expressionist paintings influenced particularly by Dubuffet, Miro and Klee.
One of the founders of the avant-garde movement 'Cobra' in 1948. Known for his bold brushwork and primitive forms, Appel often delved into themes of primal energy and the subconscious. He exhibited in the highly influential Exhibition 'The New Decade' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955 along with other 'newcomers' eg Francis Bacon, Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Soulages. His work is found in many public collections including the Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Centre Pompidou. Some of his original paintings have sold for over £1 million.
The collection comes with a certificate of authenticity from an American gallery which gives a provenance to the details including reference to the destroyed plate.
