An Irish amateur etcher
GAPE, J. A collection of 23 etchings from the 1820's. Some are after the Old Masters, others are original compositions. Fifteen are of figures (one after Rembrandt), three are architectural views (Hatfield House, St Albans Abbey, Aston Hall), and five depict animals. One is dated from Fermoy, 1820 (and there are other undated examples), another April 1821, and one Edinburgh 13th Sept, 1822.

Gape contributed plates to Samuel Howitt's 'New Work of Fables & Animals', 1820.
The British Museum records the following two examples of his work, [both acquired from the print dealer Edward Daniel in 1867.] It notes that J. Gape was an amateur etcher from Fermoy, [East County Cork, Ireland.]
a). Landscape with figures clustered by a tree on the brow of a hill beside a river. With etched signature "J G. ft Fermoy Novbr 1820"
b). Head and shoulders of a man with a fur hat in the manner of Rembrandt. With etched signature "J Gape ft Fermoy Octbr 1820"
