~ John Smith, Curator of Kew had been taking an interest in the cultivated tropical ferns in his charge, many raised from spores from herbarium specimens. He prepared a new scheme of classification and continued to study ferns, and to add to the collection of living plants at Kew. By 1865, when he was obliged through failing sight to retire, he had seen more than 1,000 species of ferns in a living condition, on which he published this work in 1866.
